LVGH
What's the
mission of Literacy Volunteers of Greater
Hartford?
LVGH teaches adults
to read, write and speak English in order
to improve their lives and enhance their roles
within family and community.
Where is
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford?
Our main offices
and Hartford Literacy Center are located at
30 Arbor St., Hartford on the first floor
of the South building. An adjacent lot offers
ample, free parking both for students and
volunteers.
In October 2005 LVGH expanded
its service area to include East of the River
communities, and opened a new site, the Wickham
Literacy Center at 656 Burnside Ave., East
Hartford.
LVGH also offers classes
at community sites in Hartford and West Hartford.
What
Does Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford
Do?
LVGH offers small group instruction in Basic
Literacy and English for Speakers of Other
Languages to adults living in the Greater
Hartford area. Teaching groups consist of
4-6 students per tutor. Instruction is individualized
and student-directed.
Who
is Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford?
Founded in 1972 as a affiliate of Literacy
Volunteers of America, Literacy Volunteers
of Greater Hartford (LVGH) has trained volunteers
to provide free English literacy instruction
to Hartford area adults. One third of our
students are native English speakers who read
below the sixth grade level; the remaining
two thirds are studying English for Speakers
of Other Languages (ESOL).
LVGH is a private non-profit
corporation and accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy
Worldwide.
What
Volunteer Opportunities Are There?
Our services and mission rely heavily on the
agency's ability to recruit and train a dedicated
corps of volunteer
tutors. Each new tutor must participate
in a 20 hour, 6 session training course offered
four times a year. Tutors then commit to teaching
at least one, two-hour group each week for
one year. In 2007, 170 volunteer tutors taught
643 Hartford area adults to read, write and
speak English.
Volunteer computer aides
assist students in the Computer
Lab, providing instruction in basic mouse,
keyboard and command techniques. Computer
Aides do not have to complete tutor training,
but do participate in a brief computer training
workshop. Aides commit to working in the Lab
at least one hour/week.
In addition to tutors,
the agency relies on volunteers to support
our major annual fundraiser, CeleBRAINtion, which is held each spring.
Finally, Literacy Volunteers
of Greater Hartford is governed by a volunteer
Board of Directors who provide support, guidance
and make policy decisions regarding the agency.
