Celebration of Learning

Help us celebrate our students' commitment to their studies!

Our featured program this quarter is a summer program we are developing for our newest students, recent refugees from Myanmar. Deeply dedicated to their studies, many of these students, like those pictured above, not only attend classes but spend countless additional hours practicing their English skills in the computer lab. These students speak Karen, a language not spoken by many outside their own community. Because we are unable to find English-Karen dictionaries, volunteer tutors are helping the students write their own dictionaries -- along the way learning some Karen themselves! Especially as new language learners, it is critical that these students continue their studies through the summer and build on the English skills they are rapidly gaining.

Our Myanmar Project initiative was kicked off in April by a $300 grant from Connecticut Light and Power. Another $200 was raised at our CeleBRAINtion event. We hope to raise $3000 through this effort, which will help us purchase books and materials for our Myanmar students, as well as provide the staff and volunteer support they need to succeed. You can help by clicking here and making a contribution. Please note Myanmar in the Designation or In honor of section. Thank you!
