Our Classes

Literacy Volunteers provides
small group instruction in
- Basic Literacy for
individuals with reading levels above
1st and below 8th grade
- ESOL (English for Speakers
of Other Languages)
- Computer Literacy for
low literate adults
- Basic Math through
Algebra
- Spanish Literacy (for
native speakers of Spanish).
- Citizenship
Basic Literacy, ESOL and
Computer Literacy classes run from
September to June in 12-week cycles, with
a 6-week summer
session. Students can enroll at the beginning
of each 12-week
cycle, in September, December and March.
Classes are small, generally
5 - 10 students placed according to
their reading and/or language skills. Taught
by trained volunteer
tutors, these classes follow a standard, student-centered
curriculum,
which incorporates real-life lessons along
with English literacy skills.
Spanish Literacy and Citizenship
classes are offered in collaboration
with Hartford Adult Education and are taught
by adult education professionals. These classes
offer open enrollment. The calendar
and schedules for these classes may vary slightly
from Basic Literacy
and ESOL classes.
Based on student interest
and volunteer availability, students may
also be able to choose from a variety of short-term
elective workshops,
e.g. math, writing, basic computer skills,
job search and resume writing.
