Our Class Policies

Attendance
Students learn when they are actively engaged in classes and motivated to accept the challenge of studying. We require that students attend classes two days or nights per week for a total of 3 - 4 hours weekly. Attendance is taken and students with excessive absences will not be allowed to continue in our program.

Textbook Purchase
Because learning continues outside the classroom with homework and practice, we require that students purchase the books and materials they need for class (approximate cost $15-$20). All materials are available at
the Literacy Centers.

Activities Fee
Literacy Volunteers requires that all students pay a $20/year activities fee.

No Childcare Provided
LVGH does not currently provide childcare services. Because we feel that students need to concentrate on their studies, we also do not allow children to accompany students to class.

We offer classes both mornings and evenings to accomodate the schedules of working students and students with children.

Weather Related Closings
Both the Hartford and Wickham Literacy Centers will close when
Hartford Schools close.

Neither day nor evening classes will be held if Hartford Schools are closed. Evening classes will also be cancelled if Hartford Schools cancel evening activities.

LVGH classes will NOT be delayed when Hartford Public Schools delay opening.

Weather related closings will be announced on WTIC-AM 1080 radio, and
TV Channels 3 and 30.
