their English skills.
Tutor
Qualifications
We are looking for individuals who have the
time and personal commitment to contribute
to our mission to provide language support
for adults in our community. Since Literacy
Volunteers provides the initial training and
continued support of our volunteers, no teaching
experience is required. What is required is
a willingness to share one's time and desire
to help others who have a need.
Tutor
Responsibilities
After completing our required tutor
training workshop , our volunteer
tutors work with the same small (4–
6 individuals) class of adult students one
or two mornings or evenings per week at our
Literacy Center or one of our community-based
sites. Volunteers work from an established
student-centered curriculum, with textbooks
and materials, and also room for individual
creativity.
We
ask that volunteers commit to one year service,
but many of our tutors have been teaching
for five years or more. Most teach for an
average of three years.
Training
All volunteers participate in an extensive but
fun training program that prepares them to work
effectively with our students. Our combined
ESOL and Basic Literacy training involves approximately
20 hours of instruction, including class observations
and student teaching.
We offer four trainings each year at various sites
and schedules.
We also consider providing on-site training
for groups and organizations with ten or more
interested participants.
